The city of Owensboro has won a statewide award for redevelopment, and it isn’t for our downtown. The Kentucky Chapter of the American Planning Association awarded the city the 2015 Outstanding Redevelopment Plan award for the Mechanicsville improvement initiative, which is substantially complete although a few new homes are still under construction. Five years ago, the city joined with the residents of the Mechanicsville neighborhood near the Dugan Best Community Center on West 10th at Omega to create a plan to revitalize the 146-acre neighborhood by this year. The nearly $9M public-private investment has resulted in 44 new homes and an increase in property values around 17 percent.
