Some good news from Owensboro Public Schools Superintendent Nick Brake yesterday in his annual “state of the district” report. . OPS has added more than 800 students since 2009. The district reported 4,448 students on the first day of classes last August. The district has added technical programs in aviation and health services, a pre-apprenticeship program with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, as well as the Project Lead The Way and Gateway Tech programs. Brake said the number of OPS students enrolled for dual credit at Owensboro Community & Technical College has almost doubled. A total of 3,625 students are enrolled in fine arts classes. That’s better than 90 percent of the students in grades 5 through 12.
