The Daviess County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a scam that several people reported Monday involving a phone call from a fake official. Some have received a call from a “Deputy Sheriff” identifying himself as Deputy James Marshall, badge number 3177. The caller says the recipient has missed a court date or jury duty, and if they go to Kroger and charge up a $1,000 card, the judge will recall the warrant. The caller also asks the person to be on the phone while the card it being purchased, so he can instruct them on where to send it. They are then told that when they appear in court, the money will be given back. The Sheriff’s Department says this is a scam, and that members of law enforcement do not ask people to send them money to avoid jail time.
