Owensboro joined Pike County on the opposite end of the state as the two local governments who raised taxes effective July 1. Pike Fiscal Court imposed a one-percent occuational tax and a one-percent business net profit tax. Judge-Executive Bill Deskins says it was either raise taxes or shut down all services. In Owensboro, the City Commission imposed a slight increase in its occupational and net profits taxes as well. That money will keep Hillcrest golf course open and cover the cost of its commitment to build the International Bluegrass Music Center, which is scheduled for a 2017 completion.
