“Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid entered the UK chart at No.1 and stayed at the top for five weeks. With sales of over $3.5 million, it became the biggest selling UK single of all time. It also served as a pioneer for future projects where different artists came together for a cause on one recording. The common denominator was former Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof, who had been affected by seeing the plight of those in Ethiopia dealing with famine and hunger. Geldof got together the top stars of that time, including Duran Duran, Boy George and the Culture Club, Paul Young, and many others. The next year, Geldof’s dream became bigger with USA For Africa’s “We Are The World,” which featured even more artists.
