The accounting firm Myriad CPA Group presented its audit of Owensboro’s city government Tuesday night in a regular meeting of the City Commission. It appears that the city ended the 2014-15 fiscal year in June with an operating balance of $30.6M. Of that $9.8M is “unassigned” and available for any spending need. That means the city has about three months’ worth of expenses in cash on hand. The report point out that the city’s net position – that’s assets over liabilities – fell by nearly $42M last year, but that’s because the state-operated County Employees Retirement System has massive unfunded liabilities. The audit found no problems with the city’s accounting and financial management practices.
