A suspect in a Cannelon homicide was taken into custody Monday. According to Indiana State Police, ISP and the Perry County Sheriff’s Department responded to a fatal shooting at a residence located at 4346 Bell Hollow Road. Preliminary investigation revealed 47-year-old Stacy Matheny of Cannelton, drove to the residence and confronted a male outside the residence. After a brief verbal altercation, Matheny allegedly pulled a handgun and fatally shot the male. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Perry County Coroner. The victim was later identified as 47-year-old Phillip Chase, who was visiting the home at the time of the incident. Police say Matheny left the scene driving a green 2001 Ford Explorer. At approximately 3:53 p.m., a Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the murder suspect’s vehicle on S.R. 144 north of Patesville. The vehicle was stopped on S.R. 144 west of Goering Road. Stacy Matheny was taken into custody without incident. A handgun was recovered from inside the vehicle. Matheny was arrested and taken to the Hancock County Jail where he is currently being held on charges from Kentucky and Indiana. Stacy Matheny’s father, Earl Matheny, was driving the vehicle when stopped by deputies. Earl Matheny was not arrested. The investigation is continuing.
