An announcement was made Monday that could drastically change how fans will see the Icemen hockey team in Owensboro. During a news conference, Mayor Ron Payne suggested it was time to build a new sports arena, and KY 54 is the location for it. The Icemen, who have signed a deal moving them from Evansville to Owensboro, had planned on renovating the Sportscenter on Parrish Avenue. Although nothing has been decided, Payne says he’s asked his staff to prepare an amendment to the Highway 54 TIF project. He says the project could bring in around $158 million in tax revenue. The city and the Icemen management have until September to decide. The Icemen will not have their first game in Owensboro until October 2017.
