KY Preps 2019 prospect spotlight: The next 11
The top-end of the ’19 Kentucky class is well known in recruiting circles, but there is a talented group on their heels. Here are eleven prospects to keep an eye on from the 2019 Kentucky HS recruiting class.
JACOB DINGLE
6’1″ | 185 LBS | S
TRINITY
LOUISVILLE, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Dingle had a very productive junior season as the starting safety for the best team in Kentucky. I could list his stats but to be succinct here is why he is so high on this list:
His father played in the NFL, he’s big, fast, and strong, drives routes, takes good run and pursuit angles, closes fast, creates turnovers, blocks kicks, and hits hard.
He’s next on deck as the kid from Trinity who jumps on the scene and I’ll go on the record and say he’s a power 5 player.
MARQUEL TINSLEY
6’4″ | 200 LBS | WR
DAVIESS COUNTY
OWENSBORO, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Tinsley is one of the biggest sleeper recruits in the state. At 6-f00t-4 and 200-pounds he already has P5 size. Last season as a junior he caught 76 balls for 1,447 yards and 22 touchdowns. Opposing defensive backs had no answer for him.
What stands out the most about his tape is that he’s not just a jump ball guy but he can also take high percentage passes to pay dirt. At 6-foot-4 he has a large catch radius but he also does a nice job of high pointing passes as well as running after the catch.
He was offered by Howard offensive coordinator Brennan Marion on 1/14/18. With a strong showing at the Best of the Midwest this February the Daviess County standout should emerge on the scene soon.
JARED CASEY
6’4″ | 225 LBS | ILB
BALLARD
LOUISVILLE, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Casey has yet to play a down for the Ballard Bruins due to a shoulder injury but that hasn’t stopped colleges from offering him based on his impressive physique.
You can’t coach 6-foot-4, 225-pounds, and fast.
The 2019 prospect already holds a P5 offer from Purdue as well as offers from Cincinnati and Toledo. Casey has a chance to crack not only the top-ten but the top-five with an impressive camp circuit and a strong senior season.
CAMERON JONES
6’8″ | 255 LBS | PRO QB
KNOTT COUNTY CENTRAL
HINDMAN, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Jones is one of the most intriguing prospects in this class. He’s got Ben Rothlisberger size and shows pretty good placement and touch on his deep balls. He also isn’t a statue in the pocket. His film shows an ability to scramble with his eyes downfield and make accurate throws on the run. He played last season in a balanced spread/shotgun system completing 60% if his 299 throws while piling up 2,646 yards and 27 touchdowns with only 8 picks in ten games.
While camping at Kentucky last summer the knock on him was he needed to improve his touch and work on his footwork. Looking at his Junior film, the evidence is there to suggest he has done both, but like every high school athlete, must keeping working to improve.
Jones is the type of kid that could see his stock sky rocket soon, and has a very legitimate chance to crack the top ten.
DEMONTAE CRUMES
6’1″ | 161 LBS | WR
BUTLER
LOUISVILLE, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Crumes is a big play offensive weapon for Butler who holds an offer from Memphis. He does a good job tracking the ball in the air and using body control to jostle defensive backs out of position then high-pointing the ball to make contested catches.
One thing Rivals will be looking for this camp season is how Crumes does against regional talent when he has to run more of the passing tree.
Regardless, Crumes is the go to guy in the clutch for his team and holds an offer form Memphis which is one of the top group of five teams in the nation. With an offer from Memphis before heading into camp season, Crumes is set up properly for big things this offseason and is definitely a candidate to crack the top-10.
BRANDON
JONES
5’11” | 200 LBS | RB
WAGGENER
LOUISVILLE, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
He’s built like an action figure and shows good explosion, vision, and the ability to bounce it around the edge and hit the sidelines for chunk yards or to take it between the tackles and run through defenders in the second level. Jones is a tireless worker and a gym rat so look for him to add even more strength and explosion to his already impressive frame. He currently holds an offer from Howard.
In 2017 Waggener transitioned from Larry Harper to Jairus Brents at QB and because of Brents’ world-class athleticism, Jones took a back seat to the Rivals 4-star in coach Johnson’s offense. Nevertheless, Jones flashed some major big play ability when he was called upon and showed he can be one of the top 2019 prospects in the state, he just needs to get a step faster in order to make that jump.
TREL RILEY
6’1″ | 170 LBS | CB
CALDWELL COUNTY
PRINCETON, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Riley is a fierce competitor with a solid frame and good size for a DB. Rivals has him listed as a corner but he’s better suited for free safety at the next level. He’s long and rangy, shows good discipline in staying over the top in coverage, and has good hands which he uses to highpoint interceptions when he’s not playing receiver.
Some intangible things that are plus factors for Riley are his work ethic and aggressive demeanor. I’ve seen him at a few camps and he’s always cutting the line looking to get more reps in front of college coaches. Last year around this time he showed up to a 7on7 tryout verbally asking if Rondale Moore was there because that’s who he was there to shut down. He definitely doesn’t lack for confidence.
TRE’ BASS
5’8″ | 180 LBS | APB
FRANKLIN-SIMPSON
BOWLING GREEN , KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Tre’ Bass is a shifty back who doesn’t get angled up for big hits, shows good vision, feels and reads flow well, and shows good burst through creases. Standing at 5’8″ Bass shows power in his 180-pound frame and looks to posses mid 4.5 speed on film as he gets through holes and around the edge fast, and tends to run away from people.
The talented back is a virtual unknown outside of the Bowling Green area but was put on my radar after he took home 4A state championship game honors on the back of 76 yard rushing, 73 yard receiving and three touchdown effort as Franklin-Simpson knocked off Johnson Central, the defending 4A champs.
Bass has good speed and good strength so hard work during the offseason and a good camp showing could increase his already good athleticism as well as his stock as a prospect. He is definitely one to watch going forward.
ELI COX
6’4″ | 292 LBS | C
WEST JESSAMINE
NICHOLASVILLE, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Cox is a big athlete who tested well enough at the 2017 Columbus combine that he earned an invitation to the Three Stripe Camp. His film is typical of most lineman from rural Kentucky, which is a road grader with a mean streak who blocks to the whistle and stacks pancakes in a Wing-T, Wishbone style attack. He’s used at tackle but translates more to an interior lineman based on his film and width.
He is going to need more polish as a pass protector in the camp circuit to really see any rise in his stock but he looks the part as run blocker and should pick up a few D1 offers before its all said and done.
U’KARI BAKER
5’10” | 175 LBS | WR
CENTRAL
LOUISVILLE, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
Baker is a versatile receiver who can run the whole tree. He has sure hands and tracks the ball well in flight. He isn’t the fastest guy on the field but he processes information quickly which allows him to play faster than his forty time. He also has a knack for taking the top off of defenses because he doesn’t slow down when tracking the ball and uses his body well to ward off closing defensive backs.
Baker is no stranger to the college camp scene and will need a good showing this spring to see his stock rise.
JOEY CAMBRON
6’0″ | 175 LBS | PRO QB
DAVIESS COUNTY
OWENSBORO, KY
CLASS OF 2019
UNDECIDED
The first thing that jumps out at you in Cambron’s film is his cooky throwing motion followed by velocity and accuracy. The gunslinger racked up 4,078 yards and 49 touchdowns with 11 interceptions through 13 games, leading Daviess County to the 6A quarterfinals.
He’s not as tall as you want to see your quarterback stand, and the lack of an over the top delivery suggests batted balls at the next level. That being said, he has absorbed his coaches system, makes good decisions with the ball, and shows the arm strength to make all the throws but also the anticipation to throw receivers open and the touch to drop it in the bucket.
Cambron probably doesn’t have the tangibles to crack the top ten list or be a big time recruit but quarterbacks who can sling it like he does are rare and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get a shot to run the show at a smaller D1 school.
