Both Owensboro and Daviess County public schools superintendents are against proposed legislation that would force classrooms to remain closed until late August. According to the Messenger-Inquirer, OPS Superintendent Nick Brake and DCPS Superintendent Owens Saylor agree that the calendar should be a local decision. The proposed bill wouldn’t allow Kentucky school districts to open classrooms until the Monday closest to August 26 to cut energy costs and to improve the state’s tourism economy by extending vacation season. Brake said OPS made its decision on when to start school based on surveys taken from parents, students and staff.
