An unplanned outage at a BP oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana has caused gas prices to spike in Owensboro and across the Midwest. Gas Buddy.com reports the refinery has to shut down a 240,000 barrel per day refining unit for unplanned and unexpected repairs. That’s better than half the refinery’s capacity. Wednesday’s gas prices in the Tri-State spiked up by 30-40 cents a gallon. According to GasBuddy.com, the most affected states are Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin, but other states are seeing increases. The BP refinery is the largest in the Midwest. Repairs are expected to take at least a month, maybe longer.
