City and county fire officials are urging people to be cautious with cigarettes and fire pits, with weeks of dry weather greatly increasing the chances of grass and field fires in the Owensboro region. Only about a third of an inch of rainfall recorded this month – that’s down from the normal 3.5 inches. Battalion Chief Steve Leonard of the Owensboro Fire Department says OFD is responding to multiple mulch fires, and a lot of that is a result of improperly discarded cigarettes. Daviess County Judge Executive Al Mattingly says we aren’t yet at the point of issuing a burn ban, but that order may come as soon as next Monday.
