Apollo High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets will participate in a 14-mile hike on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23, to commemorate and promote awareness of the Bataan Death March. The hike will serve as a living memorial of the historic Bataan Death March, which took place in 1942, honoring Filipino and American soldiers who died when the Japanese military forced the captured soldiers to march approximately 65 miles to prisoner camps. Cadets will meet at 4 p.m. Friday at Millers Mill Road and walk on the Greenbelt to the Malco Cinema parking lot. The cadets will resume the walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, starting at the Malco and walking to Jack C. Fisher Park. Along the way, the cadets will share insights regarding what the prisoners experienced during the actual event and will learn about local residents with connections to Bataan, including the late Mary Oberst, a former military nurse who was one of the “Angels of Bataan.”
