Tell City Police are reporting the solving of an auto theft case dating back to last month. On August 16, the Tell City Police Department received a report of a stolen wrecker from Ohio Valley Towing located at 1034 Main Street in Tell City. During the course of the investigation, officers learned the owner had posted the wrecker for sale on Craigslist. He was contacted earlier by a female who arrived at the facility with a male subject to complete the purchase of the wrecker. All paperwork was completed and the wrecker was released to the subjects. The owner later discovered the female had utilized a fake or fraudulent Illinois photo identification to complete the purchase. She also provided a fraudulent Cashier’s Check in the amount of $33,000. Investigators, along with assistance from the victim, were able to later identify the female as Laila A. Payton and the male as Kody F. Jack, both of Wisconsin. On September 3, 2016 the wrecker was located at a body shop in Menomonee Falls Wisconsin, where Mr. Jack had ordered the wrecker be painted a different color. Charges have been filed against Ms. Payton for the offenses of auto theft; (3) counts of forgery; identity deception; and check deception. A warrant has been issued for her arrest. A separate arrest warrant is being sought for Mr. Jack for the offenses of obstruction of justice; conspiracy to commit auto theft; forgery; and check deception.
