Joey Chestnut, the number-one-ranked competitive eater in the world will compete at the first-ever Owensboro International Bar-B-Q Festival World Mutton Sandwich-Eating Championship on Saturday May 13, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Owensboro Convention Center.
Major League Eating is proud to announce the World Mutton Sandwich-Eating Championship to its 2017 slate of sanctioned eating Championships. Chestnut will seek to set a new world record in the mutton sandwich-eating discipline.
“Those with good taste know that every second weekend in May, Owensboro, KY, springs to life with the wonderful smells and sounds of the International Bar-B-Q Festival. Smoke from hickory-stoked fires blends with the aroma of sizzling chicken, bubbling burgoo and roasting mutton,” said Sam Barclay, Major League Eating emcee. “There is simply no better place to be for the hungry, the wise and those who seek new culinary adventures.”
“We are thrilled to be able to add the World Mutton-Sandwich Eating Contest to our festival activities this year thanks to the partnership with Kentucky Legend,” said Sharon NeSmith, Owensboro International Bar-B-Q 2017 Festival Co-Chair. “Having Joey Chestnut competing in our first year is awesome and the competition brings a new exciting event to the International Bar-B-Q Festival.”
Chestnut will face fierce competition from other champion eaters including: the #5-ranked Geoffrey Esper from Oxford, MA, the #6-ranked Gideon Oji from Morrow, GA, the #21-ranked Matt Cohen from Maryville, TN, the #32-ranked William Myers from Allentown, PA and the #49-ranked Steve Martin from Roopville, GA.
