Due to overnight wind chills expected to be at or below 15 °F, the Daviess County Emergency Management and the Homeless Council of Ohio Valley (HCOV) have announced a White Flag Event for tonight from 7pm to 8am.
During a White Flag Event, participating homeless shelters are requested to place a white flag on their facility’s exterior door, which shall publicly convey that extra bed space may be available.
Two shelters, Daniel Pitino Shelter and St. Benedict’s Homeless Shelter, are participating.
Come to Daniel Pitino Shelter (501 Walnut St, Owensboro, KY) at 5:30 p.m. this evening to enjoy dinner, and then if bed space is unavailable at local shelters, go to St. Benedict’s at 7 p.m. for a warm night’s rest. You may show up on your own at St. Benedict’s any time after 7 p.m. tonight and before 8 a.m. tomorrow.
For those without transportation in rural areas of Daviess County (outside Owensboro city limits), please contact Harry Pedigo (270-315-4419) before 4pm today. GRITS may provide transportation to the Daniel Pitino Shelter, but only during the hours of 5-6pm this evening.
For those without transportation inside the Owensboro city limits, the Owensboro Transit System has a bus stop near the Daniel Pitino Shelter. Anyone wishing to ride the city bus to the shelter needs to let the driver know and the ride will be provided free of charge. This free ride is only allowed to the Daniel Pitino Shelter for the city buses at 4:35pm, 5:20pm and 6:05pm buses this evening.
According to the National Weather Service Paducah Office’s forecast, tonight will be the only night currently expected to reach White Flag criteria through at least Monday, November 19, 2018.
